Interesting Facts About Wayland
  • Wayland is a quiet bedroom community in a semi-rural setting in close proximity to Boston. It has little industrial or commercial base and takes great pride in its preservation of the forests, marshes and fields that surround the Sudbury River.
  • Wayland has its own public beach on Lake Cochituate.
  • Wayland was the first settlement of Sudbury Plantation in 1639. The Town of East Sudbury was incorporated on April 10, 1780, on land which had formerly been part of Sudbury. On March 11, 1835, East Sudbury became Wayland, and was primarily a farming community.
  • Thirty-five of the Minutemen who marched to Concord from Wayland to dare to battle the British, are buried in Wayland’s North Cemetery.
