- Katherine Lee Bates, who wrote “America the Beautiful,” lived on Centre Street in Newton Centre.
- The Fig Newton cookie is named after the city.
- The challenging stretch of the Boston Marathon known as Heartbreak Hill is located on Commonwealth Avenue between Centre Street and Boston College.
- Every year on the 3rd Saturday of October there is a Holloween drawing contest. Students can paint the windows of a local business.

- The Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) runs east and west through Newton
- Route 128 (Interstate 95) runs along the western side of the town.
